Know what you need. Buy once.

Most podcasting gear gets bought twice, once for the show you think you’re starting, and again six months in when you realise you should have asked different questions up front. Get the questions right now, and the gear decisions answer themselves. Here’s where to start.

How many people are on the mic?

Solo show, two-host interview, four-person panel? Plan for the format you'll be running in 12 months — not just episode one. Buying for two and outgrowing it in six months is the most common mistake.

Audio only, video only, or both?

Audio is faster to start, cheaper to scale, and reaches Spotify and Apple. Video opens up YouTube and short-form clips for social. Most podcasters end up doing both — knowing where you're going changes what you buy today.

Studio, location, or both?

A fixed studio setup uses different gear to a mobile or locationbased show. If you'll be recording interviews on the road, wireless gear and onboard recording change the equation.

Live stream or record-and-publish?

Streaming live to YouTube or Twitch needs different routing and processing to a record-then-edit workflow. Some gear handles both — some doesn't.

Hobby, side hustle, or business?
